Yipee! the MacBook Air is back, apparently fully fixed.
“2nd top case fitted and tested, connector onto main logic board is strengthened”
It was the rest of the response that surprised me:
Symptom | Keyboard and trackpad freezing |
Work undertaken | 2nd top case fitted and tested, connector onto main logic board is strengthened |
Further Comment | Apple give the following advice about handling:-
Furthermore Backstage Services do not recommend holding the MacBook Air in one hand while typing with the other. The slimline chassis does not have sufficient torsional rigidity to cope with such stress over the long term, and in our view this problem could have been caused with incorrect usage. We have been advised that if the product has to come back for the same issue Domestic and General will not cover the repair. |
Well the comments about blocking ventilation are a fairly obvious red herring, as we’re considering holding the machine in free air, and the rest of the opinion seems somewhat incompatible with Apple’s use of aircraft style high tech milling to form the case from a single piece of aluminium. So much so that I asked Apple what they thought, an engineer wrote back that he would be surprised if that was causing the problem, but that he was not in a position to be quoted directly, I have asked for a quotable response
In the meantime I draw my own conclusions from this
